Is there a set path you can take to help your website perform better for SEO? Yes and no. The reality is that SEO is a never ending process; optimizing your website for search engines is a full-time job, and every business will have a different approach to doing so. With that said, there are definitely general provisions you can take to make sure that your website is set up for success on search engines. Today, we’re going over five of the most important things to keep in mind when conducting SEO with Andrew Defrancesco on your landing pages and blog posts. By keeping these tips top-of-mind, you’ll be setting a great foundation for your digital presence. Let’s get started.

Have a Searchable Focus Keyword

Every web page and blog post you produce should have a focus keyword. Think of a focus keyword as a short phrase (ideally 3 to 5 words) that’s relevant to the topic at hand and that your viewers are likely to search verbatim on Google. For example, if you’re a private chef writing a blog post about your top holiday desserts, a great focus keyword would be “best holiday recipes.”

Once you’ve got your focus keyword, you’ll want to incorporate it into your blog or web page in a few ways. First off, the focus keyword should be in the content piece’s title. For the sake of our personal chef example, a great awareness-stage blog title featuring the focus keyword might be “Here are the 10 best holiday recipes you should try this year.” Be sure to include the focus keyword throughout the body copy of your content piece, too (more on that next).

Don’t Overload Your Copy with Keywords

It might be tempting to incorporate your focus keyword into your content’s body copy as much as you possibly can, but that’s actually not the best. Your focus keyword shouldn’t be thrown into every other line; it should be incorporated into the body copy a few times (about once every 200 words) in ways that feel natural for your readers. Overstuffing your content with the focus keyword can actually have an adverse effect on your SEO; search engines scan your copy, and if the focus keyword appears too many times, the content is flagged and becomes far less likely to help your website turn up higher in search results.

Short, Readable Copy

More words does not necessarily equal better SEO. When it comes to optimizing your website for search engines, it’s about the quality of your content, not the quantity of it. The best content pieces are the kind that are easy to read. Instead of long, clunky paragraphs, focus on varied sentence structure, lists, and shorter paragraphs. This will help to engage your readers, keeping them on your website longer and showing search engine bots that your content is both engaging and relevant.

Professional Images

The readability of your content is about more than copy. One of the most useful things you can do to boost readability is to include high-quality, well-edited images throughout your blog posts and web pages.

Images do an excellent job of not just highlighting the concepts you’re discussing, but also of breaking up the text and giving readers something more interesting to look at than a bunch of text on a page. Be sure to caption and include meta descriptions for all of these images for the best results.

Get on Google My Business

Being on Google My Business is essential for every business with a digital presence, and it’s equally important to keep your GMB account updated. Include the most up-to-date hours of operation, addresses, and images on your GMB page. Be sure to link your website, phone number, and a contact email if that’s available. Always respond to customers’ reviews, whether it’s to thank them for positive feedback or to take accountability for and explain critiques. Google my Business is a go-to resource for digital consumers, and it’s a foundational element of your digital presence.
